We want the best possible world for our loved ones — it’s one of the primary ways we show we care, after all. Maybe it means simple things like taking the time to make a healthy meal for your family, or maybe its something bigger, like lobbying for policy changes to make the world a better place for your kids. Whatever the case, there are myriad things we can do day-in and day-out to provide a better world for those we care about. Now, stop and think for a moment; have you taken all the steps possible to make sure your home is safe? Most would agree they have, but if you haven’t done radon testing, you’ve missed a vital step! This is where Radon Gone steps in.

What Is Radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and naturally occurring gas. It’s also highly radioactive. Even more concerning, radon is pretty prevalent across Colorado. The reason radon is a concern is that the gas particles attach themselves to other particles in the air such as pollen or dust. What this means is that, in areas with a high enough concentration, it’s possible to breathe in potentially dangerous levels of radon. According to the National Cancer Institute, radon exposure is the second-most cause of lung cancer.

Now, we don’t tell you all this to make you too scared to go outside. We just want to make you aware of this potential danger and educate you about how to protect yourself and your loved ones. With a home radon test, you can see if your house has high levels of radon inside. And, if it does, radon mitigation can help you reduce the radon in your home down to what the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) has determined are safe levels. It’s close to impossible to completely eradicate all traces of radon, but radon mitigation techniques can reduce the radon levels in your home down to minimal traces.

Radon Testing & Mitigation

The first step in determining whether your home has high levels of radon or not is testing. But radon testing isn’t a one-and-done. As your home shifts and stands against all kinds of inclement weather, it can develop cracks or weak points where radon can seep in. The E.P.A. recommends testing your home every two years to see how high levels of radon are. If the radon levels in your home are four pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air) or higher, you’ll want to seek out a radon mitigation company to reduce those levels. If your home tests at two to four pCi/L, the E.P.A. still recommends getting your home fixed so those levels don’t increase.
